Hi Everyone
I had some concerete beliefs about english language which are getting violated these days.
Guess that is called the idiocyncrasies of the language.
I. Anyways news is, I thought that while when used should have a temporal sense. However, there are many places when while is used as Although- A Concessive Conjunction.
Can some one help me with the scope of While within GMAT grammar? As in can i use while in place of although. If yes when making such usage is correct?
II. More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.
the above is a correct sentence. However if i write it as below, what makes it wrong?
While more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

I am not sure whether it was in the forums or any videos from Ron I found the following two usages of "While"
I hope it might be of any help to you.
"While" can actually mean two things:
1) while = at the same time as. I practice piano while twiddling my thumbs. (I’m very talented!) I practice piano at the same time as I twiddle my thumbs.
2) while = although, or some sort of contrast. While it’s true that I play piano and know how to twiddle my thumbs, I obviously can’t do both of those things at the same time. That would be impossible!"
Even the examples are also courtesy the same source.

eg: While i was playing, Mary arrived.
Sally was reading book while Ran was watching television.
She breaths heavily While running.
While @ non-temporal sense
(in other words, “while” to mean “although” or “whereas”)
(“Although”: A Concessive Conjunction which means "in spite of the fact")
The scope of "while "is broad,and it is fine to use while in place of although(according to the need)

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.
more than the 300 rivers which drain into IS MORE THAN all the north American great lakes combined.
(no.of rivers is under consideration)may be all north American Great lakes combines to have only 220 rivers.

Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water IS MORE THAN all the North American Great Lakes combined.
(quantity of water is under consideration)
Fresh water source world wide=3000 million liters,
20% of 3000 million liters is in Siberia's lake= 6000 million liters
which is more than all the north American Great lakes combines(means all the north American Great lakes combines to have less than 6000 million liters of water.
