Hello all -- one of my recommenders is my current supervisor, and the other one is a previous supervisor, for a job I worked 4 years ago (stopped working there in August 2015, first real job out of school). It is the only other job I’ve had, as I’ve been with my current company for 4 years. Is using a supervisor that is that long in the past going to reflect badly? I don’t really have another supervisor or person at my current job that comes to mind who could write a good recommendation for me.

Thanks!

Hello djs9781,

As long as you have one recommender from the current company, it is perfectly fine to have the second one who managed you at the beginning of your career.
It won't affect badly at all. As long as he/she still remembers you and can talk great things about you.

rgds,
Shree

Since you have no other options, it is OK to use the "old" recommender, as long as he can provide a warm recommendation and meaningful input about your professional skills. If you are worried about how it is viewed by the adcom, consider providing an explanation for your choice of recommenders in the optional essay.
