Official Solution:

All business owners invited to bid for the lucrative construction project realize that, in order to secure the contract, they must have presented an exceptionally well proposal.

A. have presented an exceptionally well proposal
B. have presented their proposal exceptionally well
C. present an exceptionally well proposal
D. present an exceptionally good proposal
E. present a good proposal exceptionally

The underlined portion of the sentence requires adjustment in two areas: verb form and diction in terms of the word well. The words invited in the first clause and the phrase in order to in the second indicate that the third clause of the sentence must be in future tense, not past perfect as in the question stem. Also, the word well in the question stem is an incorrectly used adverb, when the sentence calls for the adjective good to modify the noun proposal.
  1. Well is an adverb and incorrectly modifies proposal. Also, must have presented is in past perfect tense, when the sentence calls for future tense.
  2. This option uses well as an adverb that modifies exceptionally, but the meaning of the original sentence has been changed. Also, the first two clauses of the sentence indicate that future tense is necessary for the verb.
  3. Must present identifies changes that should be made to the verb in the original sentence, but well incorrectly modifies proposal.
  4. This option makes needed changes to both verb form and the word well as a modifier. They must present is correct future tense, and the adverb well has been changed to the correct good, and adjective that modifies proposal.
  5. This option changes and confuses the meaning of the sentence by changing exceptionally from an adjective modifying good proposal to an adverb modifying present.

Answer: D
Have Presented is Present Perfect and not Past perfect. Please make this correction.

Answer: D

Difference between C and D:
they must present AN exceptionally well proposal. - Incorrect
they must present AN exceptionally good proposal. - Correct

We ARE modifying the proposal (A Noun).

They must present - something (A Noun).
Something: A proposal ---> A good proposal ---> An exceptionally good proposal.

TakeAway:
    Well: Adverb
    Good: Adjective

I think this is a high-quality question and I agree with explanation. Just to let the responsible knows: the explanation in E has an issue. Exceptionally is not an adjective, but an adverb.

All business owners invited to bid for the lucrative construction project realize that, in order to secure the contract, they must have presented an exceptionally well proposal.

This question checks our understanding for good, which modifies nouns compared to well, which modifies adverb.

A. have presented an exceptionally well proposal-> Incorrect use of well. Proposal is a noun.
B. have presented their proposal exceptionally well-> "exceptionally well" is incorrect.
C. present an exceptionally well proposal-> Incorrect use of well. Proposal is a noun.
D. present an exceptionally good proposal-> Correct.
E. present a good proposal exceptionally-> Changes the meaning. We need exceptionally before good.

So, I think D. :)

Hey, I'd like to know why exceptionally well is incorrect. Is there a particular rule? Bunuel

victordugua Let me respond. well is an adverb and proposal is a noun. To modify a noun we need an adjective, not an adverb.

My bad, I should have told you that I was talking about answer B.

For answer B, Can't the proposal be presented exceptionally well?

As exceptionally is an adverb, why exceptionally can work with proposal in answer D?

victordugua, For option B, I see multiple errors, 1) When we place "exceptionally well" at the end, we changed the meaning. You can read it again, and review it. What we are discussing here, an exceptionally good proposal or presented exceptionally well. I feel "an exceptionally good proposal" fits the bill, 2) In non-underlined part, we invited people then something has to be in future, People must prepare...It is tense error.

Further, Option E is rejected because of the meaning is changed. Let me know, if I am able to explain.
