Official Solution:

Soul music first rose to prominence in the United States in the 1960s, when artists were combining subtle African rhythms with gospel harmonies and themes, as well as influences from the newly emergent genre of rock-and-roll.

A. when artists were combining
B. during which many artists were combining
C. at which point artists began to combine
D. when artists began to combine
E. when artists who began to combine

The content of the sentence concerns a point in time when soul music first became popular, making the use of the word began and simple past tense necessary.
  1. The use of past progressive tense in this option makes it sound as if the activities described in the sentence continued throughout the 1960s; the option does not correctly discuss a starting point for soul music.
  2. During which is redundant and unnecessary.
  3. The phrase at which point is wordy and unnecessary.
  4. This option correctly identifies the need to use simple past tense to identify a specific point in time when soul music began to be popular.
  5. The word who in the option makes the sentence incomplete.

Answer: D

My understanding is that wen you use together past continuous and past simple, the past continuous describes a longer, ‘background’ action or situation and the past simple describes the action or events. Following this rule I chose answer A.
Can you explain why above reasoning is not valid in this question?

Thank you

Does the sentence mean that soul music rose to prominence just after using of combination or it rose to prominence after playing combined form of music for several years? In case of first instance the OA seems ok. But, in case of latter, I guess option A is correct. So far I understand, it takes several years to gain popularity. It is not like that we began to use something, and we became popular right after.

Should be "influences" parallel to the "began"?

Thanks!

IMO
influences (noun) is parallel to gospel harmonies and themes (again a noun).

The construction is Combine X with Y, as well as Z
