Official Solution:

Resulting from the investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of 17β-estradiol in water and concurrent evaluation of the estrogenic activity of the treated water, scientists found that 17β-estradiol was totally mineralized to CO2 in a TiO2 suspension under UV irradiation for 3 h.

A. Resulting from the investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of 17β-estradiol in water and concurrent evaluation of the estrogenic activity of the treated water, scientists found that 17β-estradiol was totally mineralized
B. As a result of the investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of 17β-estradiol in water and concurrent evaluation of the estrogenic activity of the treated water, scientists found, 17β-estradiol was totally mineralized
C. Resulting from the investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of 17β-estradiol in water and concurrently evaluating the estrogenic activity of the treated water, scientists found that 17β-estradiol was totally mineralized
D. Investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of 17β-estradiol in water and concurrent evaluation of the estrogenic activity of the treated water, scientists found, resulted in total mineralisation of 17β-estradiol
E. Investigating the photocatalytic degradation of 17β-estradiol in water and concurrently evaluating the estrogenic activity of the treated water, scientists found that the result was total mineralisation of 17β-estradiol

(A) Since the phrase resulting from…..treated water is introduced by a participle, it illogically modifies scientists.

(B) 17β-estradiol was not mineralised as a result of investigation and evaluation . Therefore it is wrong to say that As a result of investigation of….and concurrent evaluation of…., 17β-estradiol was totally mineralized.

(C) Investigation and evaluating are not parallel. The phrase resulting C. from…..treated water illogically modifies scientists.

(D) Investigation and concurrent evaluation did not result in mineralisation of 17β-estradiol.

(E)Correct. Fixes the problems above: Investigating and evaluating are parallel and they correctly modify scientists.

Answer: E
