can somebody explain whether "where" after canadian wilderness is correct?

soumyashree

wilderness = an uncultivated, uninhabited, and inhospitable region.

"Where" is used to refer to a place.

So the use of "where" after Canadian wilderness is correct

the original sentence has "despite" but the correct answer E removed that contrast by using which. Can someone explain me why contrast is not needed in the correct answer.

Non underlined part says - The Deer- which means singular. How is they/them correct for a singular entity?
Whats wrong with D?
Had is used for scientists. So simple past must be used for scientists being the subject.

Bunuel Can you please help here as why option E is correct?

'which' refers to thing, here deer is not a thing, I guess whose should be here instead of which.
Also how 'they' is making sense in this correct option? Because suppose for a minute I agree that 'which' should be correct here in that case also it denotes singular 'The deer, which...' and later 'they' is used..how this option is correct?
kindly clarify.

Thanks in advance.

Hi swadhakamal,

I'm happy to help!

I agree with your stance about 'which'. It, indeed, is used to describe a thing. However, in GMAT SC, our focus should not be on selecting the best option but on rejecting the 4 worst options. The other answer choices make some grave errors.
Coming to your second point - deer denotes both the singular and plural version of the word.
Some other words that fall into this category - fish, hair, etc.
It is wrong to assume that 'which' can only refer to singular entities. Consider this sentence:

Blue and green, which are my favourite colors, are not admired by my mother.

Hope that helps!
