Hello,
ukc1998. The placement of
already, or any adverb in general, should come between
had and whatever follows in the past perfect construct.
a) We had often gone to the store together.
b) The cat had luckily landed on its feet after falling.
Sometimes it can go after, though.
c) He had performed quite terribly that night.
In all three cases, the adverb is placed after
had. You could even rewrite the first two sentences to follow a preference for the third, even if such revisions would make the sentences more emphatic in nature.
b.2) The cat had landed on its feet, luckily, after falling.
It may seem arbitrary, but placement conventions have simply been passed down to us a certain way, and as much as possible, grammarians have sought to standardize such conventions to make everything more consistent.
I hope that helps. Good luck with your studies.
