Hi Anil,
Its great that you took the plunge ! Yes it can be disheartening to get a lower than expected score in GMAT, but fret not. Failures are the biggest teachers of life.
From your score, it seems prima facie that both verbal and quant need work on the foundation. To offer good suggestions, a few details are needed:-
- How long have you been preparing and what kind of effort went into it?
- You mentioned you took help from neighborhood centre. How was the experience ?
- Did you take full-length tests simulating the actual GMAT environment? If yes, what was the pattern of scores (section wise, and full score)
- What score was you expecting? What do you think went right or wrong in the actual GMAT?
Also if you ordered the ESR report, please share that.
In the meantime, we would suggest a couple of general ideas for score improvement:
1.
Keep the prep short and focussed:- GMAT tests the very basics of quant and verbal, and aspirants need to develop a skill in several new concepts. Its best if you do a 2-3 months of focussed preparation and then take the exam rather than prepare over a long duration. If the lead time to exam is too long, you will forget concepts as you grab new ones.
2.
Diagnose and improve:- Analyse viz. break into parts, your score. After you have analysed the section-wise performance, focus on improving accuracy first and then on speed. You can start analysing from either your official score (can be supplemented by a ESR report) or take a diagnostic test to check your relative strengths in sections. Speed will come to you once you have a good grasp on concepts and hence have good accuracy.
3.
Get the first impression right :- In GMAT, the score is affected by performance in the initial few questions. Since its an adaptive test, the performance on your first few questions on the exam determines the difficulty level of questions you receive. Keep this in mind when re-attempting.
4.
Second time is better:- Remember that aspirants usually improve on a repeat attempt because of various aspects like familiarity with the exam format, lower anxiety, etc. So you will definitely do better on the 2nd attempt.
5.
Prep Resources:- I would suggest you focus on building the foundations. You can use GMATClub grammar book and GMATClub quant book for the basics. Also,
Manhattan Prep guide books (CR / SC / RC) are excellent resources for both concepts and practice. I'm sure you already have the latest
OG with you. Practicing
OG is recommended 15 days prior to the exam. Before that you need to practice from other sources.
