Hey Guys,
I have been preparing for GMAT for about a month now. In verbal barring critical reasoning I practiced everything else (SC and RC). In quantitative (which is my strength atleast i thought so) I didnt practice any of the data sufficiency problems though. I felt confident enough and i have decided to take a prep test to assess the areas that I should improve regardless of the above mentioned.
So, here is my analysis so far
QUANT:
1. I felt the
questions were much harder than the ones in OG 12. Naturally i spent more time solving them on average. My lack of practice in data sufficiency was palpable as i struggled to answer them in time correctly.
2. Time management wise I didnt do quite as well as I had hoped. I barely answered all questions albeit rushing through the last 3 to 5 questions.
3. I got a total
14 questions wrong out of the 37. At the risk of sounding oxymoronic I was shocked and not so much also. most of the questions i got wrong were Data Sufficiency questions.
VERBAL:
1. This was a whole different beast. I aced in all SC and RC questions.
2. But I was terribly slow. I couldnt move on until i was 100% sure.
3. Then came critical reasonoing questions which I, either out of fear or lack of adequate practice, was hesitant at best and clueless at worst to tackle them. I remember i spent a full 5 mins on one question. Again I couldnt move on as i was not sure of the choice i marked answer. I realize it was Stupid with a capital S. I missed a full reading comprehension, a full 5 question bounty, in the ensuing craziness.
4. Then realized i had 5 mins left to answer about 12 questions. I paniced and had no choice but to hit the answers randomly.
5 Finally i got
12 questions wrong out of the 37 with about 9 questions in the last 12 wrong.
Finally
the overall score came out to be 660. I was surprised rather pleasantly to see which is arguably a decent score. I am not sure how to explain that score. I thought i got abysmally low number of questions right.
Do you agree with my assessment that this was a decent score? If so what explains this given that i got a third of my questions wrong? How seriosly should i take this test or the kind of questions GMAT Prep presented in this Test? Also
people please suggest what is the best way to improve time management? Finally,
does more practice on Data Sufficiency translates to more confidence in answering them in terms of time consumed?I look forward to your suggestions and comments
Cheers!

Hi Karteek,
Here are the answers to your question.
Do you agree with my assessment that this was a decent score? If so what explains this given that i got a third of my questions wrong?
Your assessment that you need to work on your timing is correct. But other than that from your post I believe you need to gain a lot of confidence over your skills.
660 is a very decent score but your 660 is not. You must be wondering what the difference is

. The difference is that your 660 had a lot of random variable in it. You missed a lot of question and got some by clicking through. This shows that 660 is not your original score. So in your next test you shouldn’t be surprised if you get a 700 or a 600, which is too large a range.
How seriously should i take this test or the kind of questions GMAT Prep presented in this Test?
GMAT Prep is the closest replica of the original GMAT. So this test is very important and you must take it seriously. You should also take your 660 test seriously too because your 660 test will only help you find the changes you need to make in to study plan and your time management.
The questions are a little tougher than the ones given in the OG because OG only gives you the types of questions that you can expect. The level may vary according to the way you answer in the GMAT Prep and GMAT.
People please suggest what is the best way to improve time management?
Practice is the one way. The other is to create short goals like you need to complete first 10 questions in 20min, the next 10 in 18min etc depending on your comfort level on various types of questions. Make a list of shortcuts and make sure you know them well that applying them shouldn’t take time at all.
Does more practice on Data Sufficiency translate to more confidence in answering them in terms of time consumed?
That is a definite YES. It is part of maths so practice is a part of it. Another trick would be to identify the type of DS question it is and work out half way and predict the answer. Now this trick can be used only when you are not sure of solving the question and you are running out of time. Again you can master this trick only when you practice a lot and start recognizing the type of question.
