710 but low IR

Question

Hi! I am writing you guys to get some advice. Today I took the GMAT Online (Test Centers are closed in Chile due to lockdown

) and I scored 710 (Q50 V35) in my first attempt. However , for my surprise I just score 3 in IR!

So... the question is... what should I do? My target school is Booth so even though 710 is lower than the average GMAT score I feel comfortable because I think I have a good professional profile (relevant work experience, very good progress/promotions). Could my score IR3 kill my application? Are b-schools really looking at IR score? I would really like to end this GMAT stuff to dedicate time to prepare the other parts of my application. I would appreciate you comments and advice!

Congrats on 710! well done! I do not know exactly the requirements of Booth, but low IR can really hurt your employment opportunities after MBA. If you want to go to strategy consulting or investment banking they usually look for candidates with at least 6 IR score, ideally 7 or 8. Therefore, to improve your odds of getting admitted to Booth and to get a better job after graduation, I would advise retaking GMAT, aiming to score 730+ and at least 5 on IR

If your target school is Booth, I guess you'll have to retake GMAT to increase your chances. Which would obviously mean your IR score will increase.

Having said that IR is generally overlooked by Adcom as per my knowledge

Congratulations on your score! Though IR score is not a major deciding factor, it might play a role when dealing with candidates having a similar profile. You had better consult with a current student or an expert.

Hi jbgarrid,

First off, a 710/Q450 is an outstanding Score, so you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is probably NOT necessary. Many Business Schools have publicly stated that they don't use the IR Score as part of the application process, so you likely have nothing to worry about with an IR3. If you'd like to know how a specific Program views the IR Score component of the GMAT Score though, I suggest that you reach out to the School's Admissions Department and ask (the School's Representatives will likely be happy to answer any questions that you have). You're ultimately asking Admissions questions, so you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

Although I would not say that an IR of 3 will keep you out of Booth, I would say that if you have the chance to retake and improve your IR score, it would be worth it. It also would not hurt to bring up your 710 to around 730+.
