Hi sant13osh,

No, I do not think you can guess on the RC questions and still score V38. That said, if you need some advice regarding RC, feel free to reach out.

Can I just mark something in RC and focus more on SC and CR and get a 38 score in verbal? If not, how many questions can I go wrong in verbal to get a score of 38?
In my latest GMAT attempt on 18th July, I mismanaged my timing on the verbal section. I ran out of time when I reached the end of the section and had to guess 4-5 RC questions. Since I received a verbal score of 38, I guess it's possible to get some RC questions wrong.

However, I would advise against neglecting RC. During my own prep, I focussed a lot on my quant (Q39 -> Q48). For verbal, I focussed exclusively on SC (my weak area) and on CR (a little in the last legs of my prep). I ended up completely neglecting RC. Maybe my RC skills faded (since my last attempt) because I didn't practice.
Since the day of the test (~10 days), I have been practising 2 LSAT RCs per day (posted graciously by our very own Sajjad1994 ). The LSAT passages are way longer than what the GMAT serves, so they make for excellent practice.

Indeed, my RC ability seems to have improved: I feel less fatigued now after reading a passage.
Yesterday, I tested myself with 10 questions from 2 difficult RC passages (GMAT Advanced) and got all of them correct (in under 2 mins per question).
So, as my experience suggests, a little practice can go a long way.

All the best with your prep! :)

Hi sant13osh,

From what you describe, I assume that your plan hinges on a couple of details. First, that you will simply guess on all of the RC questions - and second, that you will correctly answer ALL of your SC and CR prompts. Obviously, there are a couple of issues with this idea. You will likely see 13-14 RC questions on Test Day - and if you're guessing on 3-4 RC questions in a row, then that could potentially cost you a LOT of points. In addition, it's not clear how you can be sure that you will be able to correctly answer all of the other questions (the SCs and CRs). To offset all of those missed RC points, that type of perfect performance on SC/CR would almost certainly be necessary - and even then, it likely would NOT be enough to lift your overall Verbal Scaled Score to a V38. The Verbal section is as consistent and predictable as the Quant section is, but Verbal questions have no 'safety net' - meaning that if you make a little mistake or miss a vital piece of information, then you will convince yourself that one of the wrong answers is correct (and not realize it). This is meant to say that you CAN train to score at a higher level in that section, but you have to approach that section in a really specific way. Choosing to purposely avoid over 1/3 of the Verbal questions on Test Day is not a good option if you're serious about scoring a V38.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi sant13osh,

V38 (84%) is a very good score, so that strategy probably won't work. Also, do you really want to put yourself in a position where you must get (almost) all SC and CR questions correct?

sant13osh - I have seen ESR reports where students have excelled on SC and CR and have failed (i.e. lower than 10 percentile) and have still managed to score V35. Our internal analysis of 1000+ ESRs shows the same. Hence, to score V38, you will need to be lucky in RC in addition to excelling in SC and CR. BTW - if you excel in SC and CR, then scoring 60th percentile in RC should be easy anyway.

So, if you think you can score 90th percentile or higher in SC and CR, then you should be able to score V40 with about ten additional days of effort (25 hours) in RC. Think about it...

A V38 is a pretty good score. Probably fair to say it's unlikely one can kind of skip through RC and get what is an 85 percentile score.
