Hi Raj77710331,

SCs are 'technical' in nature (similar to how Geometry questions require knowledge of formulas), so you need to know the grammar/idiom rules really well (and be able to spot when they apply) to score higher in this category. By extension, there are lots of different materials that you can use to learn this content - but you should also be thinking in terms of learning the Tactics, patterns and little 'secrets' to SC (and for that, you'd likely be best served by using course-related materials; in that way, you'd also have access to all of the other Verbal and Quant Tactics too).

From your post, it's not clear how you've been studying so far, so before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

In addition to learning the fundamentals, working on solving approach can be helpful. Don't become a prisoner to a single step by step approach.

There are some SC videos here that may be helpful:

Strategies or books to kick start sentence correction

Hi Raj77710331,

Let me share my insights.

For GMAT Verbal, it is very important that you follow the right methodology and the logical approach. Your focus has to be on eliminating four incorrect choices rather than choosing the right one. The key is to develop a solid understanding of the concepts that are typically tested on the GMAT and master the process skills that are required to solve GMAT questions. Only then, you will be able to smartly avoid the traps set by the test makers.

Before you start learning, it's important to understand what is actually tested using the questions. Each module in Verbal (SC, CR and RC) has to be approached in a different way. For example, before you start learning the concepts of SC, you need to understand that SC questions on GMAT test your ability to convey the right meaning without any ambiguity. So, it's important to approach them from a meaning stand-point. You might have often come across answer choices which are both grammatically correct and convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect because they do not convey the intended meaning. So, the process to approach SC questions is to:

• Comprehend the original meaning of the sentence
• Identify errors if any (both grammatical and meaning wise)
• Eliminate answer choices which either are grammatically incorrect or do not convey the intended meaning

You can go through the link below to understand the process in a better way:

Hope this helped and feel free to contact if you have any further queries.

To get a better score on both SC and Verbal I would suggest you to use Target Test Prep course. I have come across a few other SC courses, but TTP offers unmatched resources and materials to tackle SC, provided you regularly review the notes you make and use the course's analytics to improve your weaknesses. Hope this helps!

Sounds like you're underperforming your expectations on SC so you're looking for a 'kick start'.

If you want a rapid leap, focus on Test Taking Skills first. That will maximize your performance with the concept knowledge that you already have. Then you can focus on additional gains by improving your knowledge of concepts (if it's required -- sometimes Test Taking Skill improvements are enough to boost your SC score to a good range.)

If you want clarity into what your key Test Taking Skill Gaps, then we offer a FREE Testing Simulation diagnostic to help identify where you're falling short.

Hi Raj, since you mention SC as your specific area of concern, thought I would mention that our sentence correction book Sentence Correction Nirvana is perhaps the only book that offers a score improvement guarantee, and is especially designed for non-native speakers.

After reading the book twice (yes! it's an academic book, and so must be read twice in all seriousness, to reinforce the concepts), you will start looking forward to solving SC questions!

The book is available on Flipkart and Amazon.in. You might want to refer to these sites, to also read testimonials of how readers have benefited.

You can als go thru this post on how Soubhik, who scored V51 (overall score 780), vouches for our book.

If you want to sample a chapter before deciding to go ahead with our book, please PM me your mail-id (along with the chapter that you would like to sample) and I will be happy to send that chapter to you by mail. In addition, the entire Grammar section of the book is also available for free preview at pothi.
