The State Department is making it somewhat easier for students in countries affected by COVID-19-related travel bans to come to the U.S. this fall.
The department announced on Tuesday that students enrolled in academic programs starting Aug. 1 or later will be eligible for exemptions from all regional COVID-19 travel restrictions currently in place, including restrictions limiting travel from Brazil, China, Iran and South Africa. The State Department previously announced exemptions for students affected by COVID-19 travel bans for Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe's Schengen Area.

I hope this means no deferrals situation will arrive and things will continue as normal.

I also saw that many consulates are CLOSED and not processing visas except on an emergency basis. I looked up the emergency basis - more here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/is-us-consul ... 55960.html but basically you can apply 2 months before the start of school for a visa on an emergency basis. The start of program is usually indicated on I-20. Ideally the school would include the international orientation into that timeline but that is not always the case.
Good luck with all the folks traveling to their new homes this summer!

The deferral policy may not be announced quite yet. Many do not expect it to be anywhere near the same as last year. These MBA programs are under huge pressure to get back to normal particularly given the unit economics of an MBA student.
For what it's worth, there's talk that many international students will still have the virtual option. It's not ideal, but because the infrastructure is already in place from the past 3 semesters, it is possible to attend school while not physically being present.
So, I wouldn't count on a deferral. If you know which school are you planning to attend (or are deciding between some), I would just call the admissions office or appropriate department to understand your options. Explain your situation and they will hopefully be accommodating to the extent they can be!
