Hi Alex
I was browsing on Gmatclub and saw a comment you made about Columbia
Business School. I have recently been accepted by Columbia in the ED round.
My goal post graduation is general management. Based on your comment,
Columbia does not seem to offer me what I need in the academics in this
area. The thing I like about the school is that it focuses on a practical
program, not the theory.
I have also applied for Tuck ED (already interviewed), HBS (already
interviewed), and Kellogg (already interviewed, but I didn’t get a good
sense from my interviewer, he was grilling me the whole time, I could tell
he didn’t like me). In terms of the program of fit, HBS hands down is the
best, but what about the other two schools. I personally really like Tuck,
but the decision isn’t released until Dec. 17th, by that time, the 2 weeks
time is already up to make my Columbia deposit.
My question is, in terms of looking for programs that gives me what I want,
is Columbia not the right choice for me? I also heard that the student body
could be not so friendly, not like the community feeling I got when I
visited Tuck.

This is something you need to go with your gut on. If you haven't already, visit the campus and get a feel for it yourself.
Those who say that Columbia doesn't seem to be the most friendly school or community oriented -- that is based on their own personal impressions. It's not about whether it's accurate or not, but based on their own perceptions. And you have to form your own, which may be the opposite of what they felt, but still equally as valid - it's just your opinion.
Having said that, Columbia and Tuck are about as different as you could get in terms of environment. One is in the big city, and the other is in the middle of nowhere - as such, it's self-selecting in terms of the kinds of students.
To be blunt, don't focus on academics when choosing a top b-school. Focus on FIT. Focus on which school you're most comfortable in socially (i.e. where you'll make stronger friendships) because that is what the "network" is all about - it's not about the school brand. It's about your FRIENDS and their friends. It's not about some random stranger who happened to go to the same school as you did but whom you have no other mutual connection.
You can obsess over "general management" and "finance" and "marketing" and whatever academic function, but all of that DOES NOT MATTER in the end. Because that's not why you go to school. It's not like you're doing a completely different degree program from one school to the next - they are all MBA programs, and will teach you more or less the same things from very similar curricula. What matters most is the social environment - the environment where you feel you'll thrive most socially because it's about making friends, as simple as that sounds. That is what you'll cherish - both personally and professionally, because your job leads down the road will come through this channel.
And with that, it should be easy for you to figure out which school is best for you based on your own individual needs and personality. Also, keep in mind that these are all TOP schools. You'll have a great time and an amazing education at *any* of these schools, so if you are blessed with the choice, it's not like you're choosing between Guantanamo Bay vs. Hawaii -- but more like different resorts within Hawaii. In other words, you can't go wrong.
