Profile evaluation

Question

Hello,
I was wondering if somebody could evaluate my profile. My plan at first was to apply to a part time NYU Stern Langone program, but now I am thinking about full time deal at either NYU, Columbia or Harvard. Since full time programs are more rigorous, however, I am not sure if I have what it takes. I am not a native speaker but I have been living in the US for the last six years:

GMAT #1: 650, Q: 44, V:35
GMAT #2: 680, Q: 45, V:37
TOEFL – not attempted yet
Undergrad: Statistics & Econometrics at the University of Gdansk, Poland (GPA:3.6 on 2-5 scale) 
Work: Underwriter at one of the biggest P&C Insurers in the US. Started as an assistant there and was promoted up to an Underwriter.
Age: 30
Gender: Female

Thanks for the post. Part time v full time depends largely on where you are in your career and whether you want to stay in your current job (or move to a very similar job) or if you want a larger change. In addition, do you want to just get the education while working or take 2 years off for the whole experience?

In terms of schools, I would not recommend you for HBS or Columbia, your profile is not quite competitive enough.

NYU part time could be a good option for you, though I would analyze your profile more before providing detailed recommendations.

Hi lobylu,

With regards to whether you would like to pursue a part-time or full-time MBA program, a large part of your decision will depend on whether you are currently employed. If you are, and just as importantly would like to continue working, a part-time program will be a better choice. Are you considering a career change after receiving your business degree?

Your decision to go full time or part time should based on what you want out of your MBA. Are you looking to jumpstart your career or want to make a career change? If yes, a full time MBA program is probably your best bet. If you want to continue in the same field, and just need an MBA to advance in the field, a part time MBA may be a good option. MBA education can be a career changing experience so don't let just the rigor of the program scare you into making a switch from full time to part time.

My goal is to stay in the same industry (insurance) but change operational field. I'm currently an Underwriter but would like to move into a broader Risk Management role in the future.
So probably a part time MBA is a better choice at this point.

I wish you had shared more information on your profile.

If it is important for you to continue working, then opt for a part-time program. However, it will be require determination to put in those hours into studying after work and you would need to be as capable as in a full-time program. If you are doubting your academic abilities after a long gap from school, then a full-time program may be better for you as you can put in longer hours and give greater focus to your academics.

Whatever you finally decide, applying to a a mix of top tier and mid tier schools will be a good idea.
