Hi,
I am planning to apply US Bschool this year for 2012 fall intakes. Please would you offer me some of your opinion on my profile and my chance. Thanks!
I am a Chinese with a lot international experiences (5 years in Australia, 7 months in HK, 2 years in Singapore. 2 months in London), 24 years old. by the time i apply this Sep, i will have 27 months of full time working experience. I am in Investment Banking industry and would love to pursue my career after graduation from MBA. However, my role is in middle office/back office function. Given my interests and potentials (I believe), I wish to move into IBD M&A. MBA is something that will bridge my gap I believe.
My target schools are: Wharton, Columbia and NYU Stern
Educational:
- University of Melbourne Bachelor of Commerce (Uni ranking is top 50 worldwide)
My GPA is 3.1 (if converted according to Columbia method)
My transcript shows a very good trend and my GPA is 3.6 should first semester results were excluded. I was regretful that my first semester results were so terrible (something I will use optional essay to explain, I didnt do my transition well from high school to university).
My quant subjects have pretty high grades.
- GMAT 750
- CFA level 2 passed
Working Experience:
- 7 months in S&T middle office in a global top tier investment bank in HK
- 21 months Operations graduate rotation program (2 rotations + 1 permanent placement) in European top investment bank in Singapore.
ECA:
- Play soccer for local amateur football club.
- Company volunteering activities and fundraising
- Graduate Host and Employee representative for campus networking sessions
- Personal finance blog to share my opinion on economic news (200+ articles all self-written)
- Transition program student leader in University (share experience with high school students and help them with the transitional period)
- Member in finance club and participated case competitions
Leaderhsip:
I am not at management level. But here are some that I think worth mentioning. I led a graduate team of 4 to identify a real business problem and proposed solutions to senior management. Proposed, led to build and implemented a new method to improve the controls within the team.

thanks for all the detail on your profile. in short, you should be a strong candidate for B-school despite what may appear as an average GPA. Your GMAT should more than make up for any concerns they might have about your performance in school, and since your grades trended up in your major and also with the CFA level 2, I wouldn't even worry about trying to explain anything academically--essentially nothing to apologize for. I think schools would be attracted to your work experience, particularly banking with an international twist. Because most bankers hail from London or New York, your international diversity may be just the ticket. Be sure to tell some interesting stories about how your perspective was expanded by working in banking when and where you did. You will be competing against other bankers, so ask yourself how you stand out. What about your experience will be memorable to an admissions committee who have generally heard it all? What you offer in the classroom will weigh heavily into an admissions decision, and you seem to offer plenty. I also think you are on the right track with the way you are looking at your leadership experience. Just because you weren't the manager in charge does not mean you don't have leadership. The example you give is a great way to cast experience in a leader's light. Keep thinking that way. Extracurricular invlovement is great and frankly, a little unusual for an international applicant. Let's not forget either how valuable Chinese students have become in b-schools thanks to their booming contribution to the world economy. Don't undersell your perspective as a Chinese applicant--it should serve you well as a differentiator. Good luck.

Thanks Bryant for your quick response. And your encouraging words are the most needed for me at the moment. a few other questions to follow up, would you please take a look?
1) To increase my chance of being admitted by the three schools i shortlisted, what others can I do from now til oct this year? thorough research is definitely one, getting to know MBA students to ask for advices (i've done), what else?
2) Do you think the optional essay is necessary to explain my 3.1 GPA but upward trend? given my extremely poor 1st semester result, I eagerly want to tell admission that 3.1 is not true reflection of my academic strength.
3) Can you name my "safe" schools? (I think I have a shot for the three shortlisted, but definitely not strong enough to secure myself a position)
