Hello,
So I just finished undergrad in June 2010, here are my stats and why I am looking for help.
GPA: 3.3/4.0 from top 10 US public school or top 50 national ranking
GMAT: 710 - Q49 V38 AWA - 3.5
Currently have a few months in tech consulting, looking for new job - something in finance/IM/hedge funds and I know eventually I want to pursue an MBA.
Q:
What can I do in the next 3-5 years to get into a Top 5 school? e.g. HSW, Columbia, Chicago, Northwestern.
What is considered quality work experience? Promotions? Leadership?
Would now be time to focus on my story?
Should I be focused on ECs I enjoy and that demonstrate business skills?
Should I retake my GMAT because of my low GPA and low AWA score given I have a few years before I actually apply?

The best strategy is excellence, in whatever it is you choose to do. Figure out what you enjoy, what you are passionate about, and then work like crazy to make a legitimate impact. Making an impact, going above and beyond, shifting the way things are usually viewed; these are all behaviors of people who are admitted to the very top business schools.
What is considered quality work experience? Promotions? Leadership?
Business schools are particularly looking for experience in managing and leading others.
Should I be focused on ECs I enjoy and that demonstrate business skills?
Focus on areas you are passionate; those will be the places you most succeed.
Should I retake my GMAT because of my low GPA and low AWA score given I have a few years before I actually apply?
If you can improve your score by a significant amount (40-50+ points), you may want to consider this. If not, there are other places on your application where time would be better spent.

I think you should develop a skill and be good at it. If you are looking at moving to a hedge fund/finance, you need to start evincing an interest in it to support that from now onwards. It could be a side course you do, additional reading, following the industry so that you have reason and rationale for pursuing the same. They are alot of technology people who want to move to finance, so you need to set yourself apart. I would suggest more than the GMAT and GPA, it would be a good idea to add some extracurriculars to your profile to set you apart. It could be a sport/social work - anything that you are passionate about.
