1) I am a software engineer with TATA Consultancy Services for the past 2.5 yrs.
2) GMAT : 730 (Q50 v40)
3) College info: Total disaster! I lost an year in college & barely made it with second class. I am an engineer in computer science from an average Indian college.
4) Significant college and post-college extra-curricular activities: Mostly in or around work like groups, committee etc.
5) Important certifications like CFA, CPA, FSA, or CA. None.
6) Your target programs.: My dream is CMU Tepper. I also applied to BU SOM & Mendoza Notre dame.
7) Your post-MBA goal. I want to be a IT consultant with focus on SMEs. Eventual goal is to be an entrepreneur & start my own consultancy firm.
Remarks
I applied to, & got wait listed in, CMU tepper, BU SOM & Notre Dame mendoza. This despite BU SOM calling me a preferred candidate & Notre Dame even waving my application Fee. I feel 730 is not a good score for an international applicant. Should I plan to re take the GMAT or is there something else I need to do.

I think the obstacles are the GPA and perhaps unexciting work experience. The 730 is usually good enough of a GMAT, but if you think you can boost your verbal score without dropping in the quant, then a 750 does make you more easily acceptable. Also, if you haven't succeeded in anything entrepreneurial in the past, the entrepreneurship goal in the future is sometimes difficult for them to believe.
Here are my suggestions:
1) go on a fierce waitlisting attack to try to get in this year (https://www.accepted.com/Ecommerce/MBAWa ... tList.aspx)
2) if it doesn't work out this year, I would try to build an alternate transcript with a couple of business courses to prove your ability over the summer
3) see if you can boost the GMAT just to make up for the lower GPA (a 730 would be good enough otherwise)
4) continue to build your leadership experience and active extracurriculars.
I realize this is a tough prescription, but the results should hopefully prove worthwhile!

Thank you so much for your response. I do have a few follow up queries & hope you will indulge me.
1. I am currently working on developing a cloud based generic ERP solution for SMEs in TCS, the first & only of its kind in India (Not sure about outside India). Do you think that is something which will interest the admission committee? if not, can you suggest some ways by which I can make my work experience more exciting.
2. Are there any specific business courses that you would recommend, perhaps some that you might have found to be helpful with other similar applicants.
3. I have sent mails to BU SOM & Notre dame but have not got any response. Do you think I should stop or continue my efforts.
