Chances of getting into a top university with GRE

Question

I have recently taken GRE as I was interested in the MS in Financial Engineering program. I scored a 1420 (Q 800 and V 620). However I am reconsidering this and am planning to apply for MBA in Fall 2012.

Please look at my profile and suggest the universities that I can consider applying and my chances of getting in top 10 universities

1. Bachelor of Engineering in Comp Sc. degree a reputed university (GPA 4.0)
2. 7 years of experience in IT from a reputed Software firm . This involves coding for a Business Analytics applications as well as critical customer support. (Experience is 4 years in India and 3 years in United States).
3. Can get a couple of very good recommendations from work .
4. Have a scholarship for the entire undergraduate period.

Please suggest
- Which universities I can consider applying?
- Whether it is necessary to take GMAT?

Depending possibly on the program of exact study, most MBA's are going to want to see a GMAT score.

You background is very strong, however you will be competing against a large applicant pool (I am taking the liberty of guessing you are Male, Indian, IT - dont take it the wrong way).

I would take the GMAT to make yourself more streamlined. This is not where you want to "stand out"! :D

From what you had posted, I don't see why you cant shoot for tier 1 schools...

Hello,

It may not be necessary for you to take the GMAT as you have option for taking the GRE. More than 250 business schools, including Harvard, Stanford, Columbia and Wharton have agreed to accept either GRE or GMAT scores. So once you decide on your list of schools you can then check whether they accept the GRE. However you should check how the University that interest you feels about GRE as several universities like Booth encourage candidates to go for GMAT and do not accept GRE for the MBA admissions. Although for certain other programs like the PHD, they accept both GRE and GMAT.
We would need more information to assess which universities you could consider, but it seems like you should be looking at the top 30 MBA programs.
