I am currently faced with a difficult career decision and was wondering if it is possible to get some advice regarding how my choice might be viewed by an admissions committee.
I currently work in advertising as a media planner on the Kraft business, and my goal is to attend a Top 20 Full Time MBA program and go into CPG brand management. I plan to apply to school this fall, to enter in the fall of 2012. In the media industry, changing jobs often is relatively common, as it is often the only way to move up in terms of responsibilities and salary. Particularly during the recession, but also in general, talent is very fluid as there is high demand for qualified workers and clients frequently move their business from agency to agency. I have a little over four years of experience in the field, and have held four jobs at different agencies. Two of these moves were due to losing the client business and were not my choice, the other move was to get experience in the CPG category and grow my experience. I am now at a point where I have out-grown my role and am ready for a new challenge, which for various reasons is not possible at my current company. If I stay here for the next year, I will not likely receive a promotion. However, I have been offered a promotion at another media agency, which would come with a significant salary increase, as well as the opportunity to manage a team of four people (my current role has no direct reports).
Given that my end goal is to get into school, I am an concerned about how accepting this new opportunity will be viewed by admissions committees. At this point, I already feel the need to address my "job hopping" in my application, and also plan to have one of my recommenders discuss how common moving around is within our industry. With that said, I worry about doing anything that may cause a red flag and think it is important to think long-term with this decision. Any insight you are willing to provide is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
FYI, the
MBA goal is never to get into school. The end goal is what school leads to.

The MBA is a means to an ends, always.
You indeed face a difficult decision. However, I think you can handle the job changes with the recommendation and your essays. To me, the advantage of taking a new position that provides increased responsibility and growth both from an admissions perspective and a post-MBA employment perspective is worth taking any increased risk you may incur.
