Hello All,
I have been discussing a Wall St. Journal article for weeks now with various prospective MBA applicants who have contacted me at my website wanting to know my view about the article. In light of the interest, I wanted to make sure you all had heard of the article. It presents good news for those of you who have manufacturing or technology backgrounds and are seeking to gain admission to a top MBA program. The Wall St. Journal article indicated that Harvard Business School (HBS) increased notably the number of candidates it admitted with manufacturing or technology backgrounds. Its incoming class of 2013 will have nearly 8% more students from manufacturing or technology backgrounds, an increase of about 73 seats devoted to candidates from these backgrounds! The link to the article is below.
For those of you first-time applicants who have manufacturing or technology backgrounds, this is great news—you will potentially have a stronger shot at top programs if this trend is sustained at HBS and reflected also at some of the other Top-15 schools. You will need to take steps to prepare outstanding applications, though, because the Wall St. Journal article noted that HBS admitted candidates it perceived to be of the highest caliber among the applicants. Please note the specific quote from Harvard managing director of MBA admissions, who referred to the way HBS chooses its class, stating, “We drive towards what they can contribute to the overall learning.”
The volume of MBA applicants with manufacturing or technology backgrounds remains exceedingly high, and so competition will remain very keen. Key to your success: you must present a compelling case about why you need the MBA and why you would be a great addition to the school. So, still strive to compile the strongest applications possible. Everything should shine and present outstanding strategic content, including your essays, resume, application form and recommendations.
For those of you who have manufacturing or technology backgrounds and are re-applicants, the Wall St. Journal article should provide some hope to you as you re-apply. But, there are many important things to remember in a re-application. Businessweek.com cited some of my advice about this, so take a look at that article also (link below).
