Yes, a large part of it is to do with the self selection. Number of b school applications from candidates who are 32 years old or higher is lower than that from 25-30 age group. When you are not around the average age, it becomes more important for you to explain in yours essays why you think it is the right time for an MBA. So is it with straight throughs as well.

It may happen that those with higher years of work experience, a strong correlation with the age, may not prefer to spend two years of their most productive time of their life in pursuing education. Some may apply to 1 year course where the average age is around 30, others may go with executive MBA. However, dont let the averages speak too much; if you have a strong reasons for applying to full time programs now, now is the right time for you.

I have a slightly less positive, yet I believe very realistic reaction. Because of your undergrad, your age, and your experience, if you are targeting a top 10 school, it would need to be toward the bottom of that top 10 list. Growing a business is great, but compared to other candidates who have their own business, a retail business is slightly less impressive (though I would need to hear more). Also the age is a bit of a concern because schools tend not to accept that many students your age.

That said, MBA programs are not out entirely. Are you only targeting full time programs? It would be very important for you to spin your story correctly, especially since you do not have the profile of a typical applicant.

Good luck and reach out with any more specific questions or advice.
