Hello

While aiming for top schools then a score above 700 is desirable. Also the GMAT alone won’t determine your chances of admission; your work experience plays a vital role as well. You need to ensure that academically you are in a good position. However it is not just the academics but beyond the academics that will help you in determining your candidature.

Generally most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So Start thinking what makes you unique and what’s that ‘hook’ that will be key to your application.

Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in 5 years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you could put in a strong set of essays. Make sure you follow the ‘show rather than tell’ principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors.”

Hence the quality of your work, your academics and activities beyond academics will aid your application process.

Hi,

Let me be honest while evaluating your profile.
Looks like you work with Nokia. Now its a good brand name but 5 years IT ( though you work with a telecom giant but the role is software dev) for an Indian candidate is the most common a profile can be.

Being an engineer you can get a 700+ if you work hard. So don't aim a 650+. Because its only the GMAT score that you can change now and there is a huge difference between 650 and 710.

Another advice is to look at your post MBA goals. Since you don't have any backgroud / experience of finance or banking, convincing the adcom about a finance career post MBA will be a tough thing to crack. A lot of applicants who intend to do that take CFA etc and some internships / projects to show their desire and effort towards making a transition.

Figure out what can help you stand out from your peers in your company/ industry . Is it your event management skills, interpersonal skills, client engagement skills or your knowledge about the entire mobile business. Keep a balance of softer skills like team work and technical skills like project management.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response. Additionally, if you could send me your resume, that would be helpful. Based on your profile, a career in banking would be a big career switch. Not saying that it could not happen, but you certainly would not want to count on it. Some schools you should look into:

Esade
Rotterdam
Oxford
IE
IMD

In terms of careers for you, it depends what else interests you. Perhaps move into a more strategic role at a tech firm, rather than your current role.

Please reach out for additional questions or advice, this is very high level right now I realize.

Thanks all for your evaluation ... I will consider all your advice while applying for any B-Schools.

Last but not the least query :) : I have taken date to write GMAT in 2nd week of Sept. Do i have enough options to get admission for the course 2012-2013?
