It's a matter of expectations.

There's no point in me telling you to reach for something that isn't within your ability (and could make it worse -- only to make it discouraging and demoralizing, and then being unable to see the positives in what you've done).

Conversely, if I tell you that you're doing just fine as is, it only creates the incentive to stay put rather than challenge yourself more.

That's why it's got to be 100% self-motivated, from within (and of course that's not easy at all!). You know what you're capable of, and if you're working to your potential right now, then asking people what else you can do won't be productive. If you're not working to your potential, then you know what you have to do without having to ask anyone what to do.
