Hi
I am in the eairly stages of my search for an MSfin and MS in financial engg. course. I am hoping to send my application by end jan-mid feb and want to enroll in courses which start btw aug-sept 2012 to feb-march 2013 (guess this time frame rules out many US universities but hope there are a few in europe I can apply for)
Following is the summary of my profile :
Age : 22 years(23 by marticulation)
Undergrad and graduation : B.tech + M.tech(Dual Degree 5 years course) from IIT Kharagpur with GPA of 7.3/10.
expected GMAT : 730-750
Proff. qualifiaction : CFA LII cleared, will clear LIII by marticulation
Work exp. by marticualtion : 12 months as business analyst in one of the top 3 retail banks in the world.
Extra Curriculars:
- Involoved in a bevreage industury based startup for the past 2 years
- Several other community activities
- Won numerous competitions and quizes and been a national level tennis player in school
- also team caption of various events and club predent in my college.
Can you tell which kind of colleges should I apply for and if my profile is good enough for colleges like Haas school(berkely), UCLA, LSE, HEC paris, perdue unv. etc.
Also which other courses should I consider for my applications....

Besides the places you have mentioned, you should look at NYU Stern, Chicago Booth, and LBS.
The selection criteria for the MS in Finance is different from the general MBA - although your extra-curriculars do matter, a much greater emphasis is placed on your education, skills, and domain knowledge. In this respect, the CFA is definitely a positive factor. Your work-ex could be higher to give you an advantage, as most applicants for these programs will have a proven track record in their profession or a solid degree in finance.
We usually provide a recommendation on schools to people only after knowing their exact work profile, the kind of program they are looking for, and the money they want to spend. In your case, without having the benefit of some of these, a would say a Purdue or an LSE would be easier compared to a Haas or UCLA which are much more competitive.

If you are able to score in the desired range academically you should be in a good position to apply to these schools. Although make sure you have well rounded application. Highlight academics, beyond academics and you’re your work experience like what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. Also engage in conversation with alumni of these schools so what you aim to get out of the program will eb met by these schools and courses.
