I have a concern regarding my messy undergraduate and am not sure how much an impact it will have for my future MBA dreams.
Background:
Actually my undergraduate degree is somehow messy. I was at one university for 4 years and tranfered to another to get my diploma done in another 3 years.
Coming from Germany the standard period of study was 6 years. Back than we had not Bachelor/Master Programs which are typicall for the us.
The problem actually is that I messed up one course 3 times in my first 4 years and had to switch to another university.
The reason for my poor performance was my lack of focus on study. I was more into work to support myself/family and furthermore started out my own little onlineshop, which I finally gave up as I transfered to the other university.
I am not sure if this is a total dealbreaker for my MBA aspiraton.
Does it make sense to address this poor behaviour in an obstacle essay or optional essay.
I would appreciate any help.

Well it is very unusuall that any one portion of an application will keep someone out of business school. It is usually a combination of factors. There are many stories of people overcoming poor undergraduate studies to attend some of the best BSchools in the world. Plus, the farther you get away from Undergrad Study, the more emphasis is put on your work experiences, and the rest of your application as a whole. That being said, top business schools are extremely competative and even with perfect grades etc... it can be a challenge to get into Top 10 schools. But, there are 100s of great business schools throughout the world. So I guess it also depends on what you're looking for.
I would definitely recommend that you write an optional essay about any portion of your application that would raise "red flags" with an Adcom. They are going to have the questions "why" so your optional essay should answer it. Just remember that all essays are a chance to sell yourself, including the optional essay. So make sure to spin any problems you had into the past into learning experiences and show how you overcame adversity. Also, you mentioned that you had a business, so this is a big opportunity to show your entrepreneurial spirit. Bschools love to see people that overcome challenges, take on hard work, and never give up. NEVER use this essay to write your own obituary. Some people will totally ruin themselves with that essay. REMEMBER, SELL SELL SELL, and you just might be headed to a great school!

First of all thanks for your response. Iam actually a little lost and not sure if any school will give me an admit because of my messy undergraduate.
Iam out of university for almost 4 years right now and have a fast track regarding my job (2 Pormotions etc).
So actually I will adress this an essay like this :
"Describe an obstacle you have faced in your professional or academic life. How did you overcome this obstacle and how did it foster your development?"
Or is this not the right essay for such a case? What do you think?
The schools iam targeting are Tepper, Boston University, Babson, USC, UC IRvine
So not the TOP10 actually!
