Tech Candidates: Avoid a Mistake – Those Recommendations!
Hi All,
As many of you who are from tech backgrounds think about MBA applications you will submit within the next few months or in Round 1, I thought I would post some advice about common mistakes you should try to avoid in your MBA essays and applications.
In separate posts, I have written about the importance of recommendations. But many people ask me whether there are particular problems that are associated with the recommendations I see written for tech candidates in particular. For many tech candidates, a frequent problem is that the recommendations do not stress leadership. If the candidate is from an engineering background, the recommendations may also fail to highlight business-relevant skills. Correcting these aspects of the recommendation comments can help you to stand out tremendously.
Some candidates ask me questions like, “Well, how can I show business-relevant skills if I am an engineer? I have not helped to sell any products.” But sales are just one of many, many types of activities that are business-relevant. As an engineer, you will have participated in and hopefully led some great teams, and that experience is business-relevant. How did you manage people? How did you articulate goals? What time management, delegation and people skills allowed you to succeed? Topics like that are business-relevant.
I recently worked with one tech candidate who, unfortunately, had submitted recommendations to one top business school before he began working with us at MBA Admit.com. When I saw the content of that submitted recommendation, I had little hope that the candidate would receive a good outcome at that school. Fortunately, we were able to work with his recommendation writers for Wharton and MIT before they submitted the recommendation letters and the candidate gained admission to those two schools.
