Accreditation Question

Guys,
I know this might be a dumb question but I really don't know. So why is the accreditation important when looking at schools?

If they aren't accredited then that means that they don't meet the standard set by whoever does the accreditation. The problem with this is that they are held to know certain standard, so companies on the outside don't know what your degree really means. I mean anyone could create a "school" and give out "diplomas" but if they aren't accredited, then it really doesn't mean much b/c they aren't held to high enough standard to be accredited.

So is one better than the other? For example AACSB vs. ACBSP

AACSB is considered the "gold-standard" for all business school accreditations, and probably the only one worth consideration.

HBS, Stanford, Wharton, etc...all AACSB-accredited.

Basically without AACSB accreditation, the business school is basically not legitimate. Any decent university that has an unaccredited school is definitely aiming for accreditation in the very near future. For example, The Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is unaccredited by the AACSB but is attracting some great candidates, but Hopkins is aiming for AACSB accreditation too.

For law school, UC Irvine has a new law school that is attracting great students, but it's not accredited because it's a novelty as well.
