What schools should I apply for?

Question

Hi everybody,
I have just taken my GMAT - 640 (Q49,V28)
- 2010 pass out, B.Tech - ECE(64%) from Juit, Solan. 
- currently working for Philips Electronics India Ltd. as a business developer in lighting division handling a techno - commercial profile. (Jan'11-present)
- had a startup(online retail business), had to pull it off

Need help in taking a decision whether i should go for another attempt on GMAT (this was my second attempt already, my previous score was 600, Q50,V22). What all schools should i target, on the basis of my current score? 
A few them which I have short listed and think can be reachable targets are - 
1. Singapore Management University 
2. Nanyang 
3. Melbourne Business School 
4. Asian Institute of Management
5. Sp Jain global

Does this list falls in line with my profile mentioned as above?

Experts, please guide.

Hi Abhimanyu,

You have quite a good profile. A low GMAT score can certainly be offset by submitting a good essay and working hard on your application and interviews. Most business schools see a combination of all these things to grant an admission.

The choice of business schools you have made is good but as per your profile and current GMAT Score I would recommend you to target below mentioned business schools. The below mentioned business schools are among the few good business schools and comes in between the 650-670 GMAT range:

1. Singapore Management University 
2. Nanyang 
3. Melbourne Business School 
4. NUS
5. Great lakes

Also let us know the geography where you want to apply. If you are interested in US and European Business Schools then the list of business school will be different.

Hi neha, thanks for your response. 
Primarily I am looking for Asian schools and only school beyond that I m targeting is Melbourne business school. So for the schools you have suggested, if I prepare a convincing application and a gud interview, I have some realistic chances, right?

Hi Abhimanyu,

Yes, if you work on these B-School applications I think you have fair chances of getting an admit and instead of Melbourne Business School, I would recommend you to target AGSM (Australian Graduate School of Management). AGSM is currently better ranked as compared to MBS. You can see the latest raking of B-Schools here  https://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/global-mba-rankings-2012 .

Also I would suggest you try to make some contact with the alumni of various B Schools that you are targeting to apply to get more inside information about the school.
