Hello!
I'm interested in pursuing education at business school after I graduate from college and work for a few years. That being said, I'm not exactly sure what programs to consider and what fields in which to focus, so if you could offer any advice on how to choose a field or how and where to look, I'd be very grateful. I'm also wondering which areas of my profile I should work on to most effectively improve my outlook.
Profile: 19-year-old Asian-American male
Work:
- Two summer internships and a winter internship with a high-performing firm in finance
- Lots of teaching experience (mathematics)
Education:
- Will graduate in 2015 with an A.B. and S.M. from Harvard in Applied Mathematics, current GPA of 3.7.
Extracurricular:
- President and co-founder of Applied Math society; I work with students and faculty to improve the community of the department, organize speaker events with very notable speakers, lead volunteer efforts (e.g. we partner with organizations to get kids interested in mathematics through demonstrations) in our community, and organize social events.
- Rugby; I play as a prop and flanker on the school's rugby team. I'm definitely still developing as a player.
- Music; I am a section leader in the school's top orchestra and devote considerable amounts of time to a small ensemble as well.
GMAT:
1 try: 780 (99%), Q (99%) V (99%)
Long-term ambition:
I'm not sure yet. I really enjoy working with numbers, so quantitative fields such as finance are naturally attractive. I'm wondering how I can best figure this out in the next few years.
Short-term goal:
I'd like to pursue an MBA in order to be a more effective leader and manager in whatever pursuit I end up following. I'm considering programs like 2+2 at HBS that would immerse me in business/management education "shortly" after graduation.

Shooooooot! A 780! And Applied Math at Harvard!!!
Well, I'd say you can take your shot for HBS 2+2, and if it doesn't work out, then go the work path for a few years and apply at HBS then.
In the meanwhile secure another awesome internship, and add what you can on the leadership and volunteer sides of your profile to strengthen your 2+2 application.

You are off to a very impressive start and should be well positioned to earn an MBA at a top school. Kudos to you for planning so far ahead. To narrow down your future career options, the best approach is hard experience through summer jobs etc., but developing and reaching out to mentors and people already in the field is another excellent route. As for what more you can do to improve your profile, you're already doing the right things -- showing leadership and excellence in multiple areas. I would just note that demonstrating leadership of people is a key skill business schools seek (your Applied Math Society and section leader experiences are assets for you), so keep seeking opportunities to take leadership and demonstrate impact. Also, don't spread yourself too thin. Develop core strengths or passions and let those grow over time.
