jd/mba separate application

Question

I'm considering applying to both JD & mba programs at the same university. Can one apply to l-school and b-school separately without doing a joint application?

For essays and personal statement the separate application is really useful as either school wouldn't check with the other. A joint application has essays that need to justify need for both degrees in each application.

Certain schools have joint applications like the integrated programs at Wharton, Yale, and Kellogg where you graduate in only three years. At Wharton and Yale, I know you begin the 1st year attending law school classes and that 1st year law students can apply for the program separately.

At most other schools without integrated programs you can apply as an MBA for the JD program when you are at the school.

One can apply to the other program during their first year (1st year MBA student or 1L) but can you apply separately to each in the same year?

Actually for Wharton and Yale you can only apply as a 1L (not as an MBA) because the program begins with a year in law school. For most programs without the integrated program the normal process is to complete separate applications.

For integrated programs, Kellogg and Wharton has a combined application. Yale you apply to each program separately.

thanks for your responses about difference between the integrated program at W and separate application at yale.

However harvard and yale do have a combined Jd/mba program. Can you choose to apply separately to HBS/HLS in the same cycle even though you want this combined program?

One advantage for separate application can be that you don't need to justify the need for joint program through essays. So the bschool essay can solely focus on post mba goals and L-school essay can focus on post-jd goals, which may be different. Since either school would only look at their essays (the applicant wouldn't check the joint application option in the application and wouldn't write the joint goals essay), it makes the application easier. But if you checked the "joint jd/mba" option in the application, then the both HLS and HBS would discuss application/essays with each other.

With Harvard you apply separately to HLS and HBS. Each admissions committee separately reviews the applications. You can also apply to HLS or HBS after your first year at the other school.

I would recommend, though, that if you apply in the same year you try to make your goals consistent.
