need info on NYC-CBS tandem..!

Question

Hi Bryant, 
Can you please share some deep real-life insights on how NY can be beneficial and will add value towards CBS MBA grads with RE focus both during MBA and post-MBA? And how NY is as far as RE industry is concerned because my post-MBA ST and LT goals are in RE... 
 
All the information I've about NY, is mostly from Internet/Newspaper/Journals...and neither I've lived or worked in NY.So, I was thinking that you may share some solid practical information on the same to fill-up this void at least to some extent...

The classic Frank Sinatra song says it best: If i can make it there, I'll make it anywhere. New York is arguably the most dynamic and sophisticated REal Estate market in the world, so to pursue your MBA at Columbia with a focus on RE would position you very well for a real estate career to be sure. Of course anyone and everyone with a RE goal will also be applying so the competition for admission is fierce and the application pool is a large one. Standing out is more difficult than applying to a RE-focused program outside New York. As a backup, you might consider applying outside to a school outside the city, but then making sure you get an internship in NYC. Could be a good "back door" if CBS does not give you the attention you expect.

It'd be really helpful if you could share more specific details on 'NYC and RE industry' - how they're parallel ? What are the special features of NYC in the context of RE that we can't get elsewhere to that extent ?

New York is simply a marquee city period. it adds credibility to your resume just as if you worked in finance, retail or just about anything in New York. There are also some hgh profile RE companies based in New York such as Cushman & Wakefield, Gramercy Capital, The Related Companies, Tishman Realty & Construction and the Trump Organization. Having said that, thre are real estate moguls in every major city, so working in NY real estate will not get you very far long term if you ultimately want to work in Atlanta or Dallas, for example. You'd want to drop anchor and build a reputation in the general area where you want to end up. Still, it would be impressive to any major real estate company in any city if your background education and internship were in New York, just like it would be impressive to bank employers in North Carolina if you have Wall Street experience. Hope this helps.
