Hi,
I am currently working in the corporate law department (more precisely as a mergers & acquisitions lawyer) of a large law firm of a small European country.
Would you consider a legal background as a disadvantage in view of applying for a MBA? Are ther many applicants having such profile?
Thanks a lot in advance for your answer(s)!
S.
I have heard some people say it is a disadvantage, but I really don't buy it. Lawyers have particular challenges in the admissions process, but so do investment bankers, consultants, etc.
Lawyers' challenges:
1) Poor quant background. Typically lawyers were not the quant jocks as undergrads. They simply may not have the course work or hard quantitative analytical skills. If so, this can and should be rectified.
2) A clear reason for needing an MBA. This is not unique to lawyers, but since lawyers already have a high-earning profession, importance is heightened.
3) Lack of teamwork combined with lawyers' reputation for abrasiveness.
If you can overcome these challenges and otherwise have a competitive profile, you will not be at a disadvantage. No, there are not many applicants with your experience applying to US business schools. There may be more in Europe, but not by much.
Good luck![/list]
