This is easier said than done. You’re going 100mph through this process and putting your college level English courses to work. Next thing you know you have a beautiful essay that you think captures your essence perfectly. Congratulations! But before you hit submit, take a step back! Are you answering the question? Are you answering it WELL? Missing this incredibly simple point can really stress your application!
What do we mean? Well, at Critical Square we love examples so here’s one. One of the most common instances we see of this is when a school asks what your goals are. It’s almost a trigger for the flood gates. You end up restating half your resume, gushing about all your experiences, and listing how the school will be so great, But, after all that, most folks don’t take the time to walk the adcom through what their goals ACTUALLY are. People relegate less than 20 words of a 500 word essay answering the question! If that was good enough, why would they give you so much real estate? Why not just limit your response to this question to 150 characters? With 500 words to work with, we’re not sure why most applicants think one, high-level, generic sentence answers the question perfectly.
So when you’re thinking about writing your essays this fall, start with answering the question!
When you have your essay drafted, remember – an experienced 2nd perspective can go a long way! At Critical Square, our Essay Editing services provide candid and tangible feedback – absolutely no fluff here. It’ll be rigorous but trust us, you’ll thank us in the end! Learn more
