Research Assistant (as part of my PhD): 5 years
- supervised junior PhD student
- conducted independent research
Consulting Lead/Project Manager 8 month:
I managed a team of junior consultants all with PhDs from elite schools. The work focused on management and strategy consulting for the biotech and pharmaceutical sector.
Healthcare Software development consultant: 1 yr, manage junior analyst and interface with clients to develop IT solutions for hospitals and clinics
Volunteer: 2 years as a tutor for homeless children at local shelter in community.

Undergraduate (University of Toronto) GPA 3.4
Double Major: Economics and Biotechnology
PhD (University of Southern California) Biochemistry GPA 3.6
3.Test Scores- GRE: 1530/1600 GMAT: 740 IR 8
4. My goal is to go into equity research primarily focused on the healthcare and life science sector after my MBA. One of my primary concerns is whether my PhD work experience as a research assistant counts as work experience for MBA application. I was technically a paid employee of the University throughout my PhD.

First, regarding the TA work, if the work was done full-time and was compensated separately, then it would be considered regular employment. If it was part of your doctoral stipend, then some schools wouldn’t consider it regular employment. However they define it, though, they will understand its importance and its role in your education and career. Keep in mind that the adcoms view your application holistically.
One factor that will have significant bearing on your competitiveness is the quality of your work experience. The "what" looks good, but adcoms will also look for a track record of specific accomplishment and impact; they want to see you excel professionally relative to accomplished peers.
Overall, I think your list of schools is on target. Depending on the quality (as noted above) of your post-school work experience, they would be in the on-par to reasonable-reach range.
