Hi,
I need some advice on whether I need to keep my job or not. Here is a little background :
I am a working professional with 12 years of experience in IT services. I've been a technical leader for the past 6 years. I work for IBM, Bangalore, India. At home, I am a mother of 2 girls - a 6 year old, and a 2 year old. I feel I am stagnating with respect to my career as I've not seen much change in the last 5 years in my work life. I am toying with the idea of doing an Executive MBA in India for which I need to start preparing for my GMAT. Owing to this decision, I am inclined to quit working and prepare for my GMAT. I am not sure if this is a good idea from the application standpoint, will my 'unemployed' status at the time of applying be held against me? My rationale behind quitting is, I am almost certain I cannot manage my kids (I have little support at home) + keep a very hectic job + prepare for a decent GMAT score. But if my quitting is going to be a self defeating strategy in terms of getting an admission into a good B-school, I will have to re-evaluate my decision.
I'd really appreciate an advice , and also an insight about what the acceptance criteria for an executive MBA program within India is.

Hi Deeptha,
With 12 years of work experience, I recommend if you can manage a couple of months off from your current work schedule and prepare for GMAT. Still if you cannot manage you might have to quit, but it is not advisable at any point of time. Try to get a 700+ score which will open almost all the doors for you with your enormous work experience.

It appears that you are talking about the 1 year full time MBAs and not really the exec courses? Read here for more on this confusion.
I wouldnt recommend taking a break for GMAT prep either - it can rarely be explained/justified to adcoms and they do not want you to do that. I am sure you will find a way out of your personal constraints (part time nanny, extended family, leaves etc etc) - but dont compromise on this point.
The other thing to also evaluate a bit more is whether the MBA is indeed a need of the hour. Check out this book to gain a little more perspective on this.
