I just got out of an undergraduate program. My GPA is not that well but on the practice GMAT I did very well.

I am confused..some people told me with a GPA below a 3.0 business schools wont accept me regardless what I get on the GMAT

But,

My Gmat review center advised me with a solid grade on the GMAT and current work position my GPA will be overlooked.

Can someone please clarify what should be done?

I got into LBS with a 2.97GPA. You just have to make sure that you emphasize the other strengths of your application. If you have many years between graduation and b-school, and you have a good GMAT, It will be possible that schools overlook your lower GPA. You can read my profile here:

You can overcome a low GPA with a solid record of progression professionally, a high GMAT, and hopefully some post-college A's. A good reason for the poor undergrad performance helps too. How much of all this you need depends on how low the GPA is.

What about the flip of that equation? A high GPA (3.99/4 from USC) and a low GMAT (620 with a retake on 8/20)? I am curious if the fact that I did well in all of my quant classes in college will balance out the lower quant score on the GMAT? I am working on improving the quant score on the GMAT but am curious what effect my GPA will have, if any?

Your GPA will mitigate, especially if you have A's in business classes and demanding quant coursework and your GMAT is in the 80% for a school's GMAT score. It won't, however, eliminate the impact of a 620 when applying to top schools. In that regard, a low GMAT is worse than a low GPA. Time and a record of achievement will lessen the impact of the low GPA, especially if there was an upward trend or a "good reason" for low grades. Time doesn't do anything for a GMAT which can be retaken.

And that's exactly what you are doing. Good luck with it!

Thanks for the insight. Hopefully the practice will get my quant score up :).
