I am planning to apply to the Part-time MBA program at Ohio State. Although I know that this is not one of the "top" programs, I live, work, and am married in Columbus and this would allow me to continue to work full time. Here are my stats:
GPA: 2.63 (there are mitigating circumstances such as the year that I had cancer and had to go to school full time - insurance reasons - while working 30 hrs. a week and getting chemo.)
Degree: BS in Human Ecology (Human Development and Family Science, Middle Childhood Education Option)
Work experience (full time): 1 year as maintenance secretary at real estate management firm, total of 5 years as Gov't Affairs assistant at 2 different lobbying firms (currently working for Exec. Dir.)
Work experience (part time):student painter at OSU for 2 years which included managing & training the crew, 6 years as help desk attendant at OSU
Activities: Active on Undergrad. Student Gov't committees and campaigns, 2nd term as officer for Ohio Women in Government, served as co-chair and steering committee member for several other events and organizations
As you can tell, I generally worked more than one job at a time. The thing is that I just graduated with my undergrad in June! I've been going to school for 8 yrs (of course there were several quarters that I had to take off for financial reasons). Therefore, I've generally been working one full-time and one part-time job while going to school and other than my freshman year (very wrong major) and the year I was sick, I have not received a grade lower than a B-.
I'm also concerned that since my undergrad degree was not business related, it will count against me. However, I did take the initiative my last quarter to take an accounting class and I've taken macro/micro econ. and stats.
So, I guess my questions are: (a) what should be my target GMAT score (b) does all of my work experience count even though it was while I was going to school rather than after (c) what is the best way to bring up the mitigating circumstances behind my low GPA and (d) do you think I have a chance of getting in?
