Hi,
I recently took my GMAT over the weekend and scored a 780. I received a 51 on the Verbal Section and a 49 on the Quantitative. I am 27 and have a bachelor's degree in Enology (Wine Science) from a small California school with a 3.6 GPA and a Master's degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis with a 3.8 GPA. I have studied in Australia and had a fellowship in France. I am currently in the second year of a three year management development program at a major American winery and am functioning mostly in the role of a scientist. Last year, I was doing wine sales in the Northwest. Other than that experience, I have worked production internships at three wineries and have been a champion collegiate and high school debater.
My questions are:
What are my chances at a top 5 business school assuming I don't apply until the Fall of 2006?
If given a choice, what sort of role should I pursue in my next rotation next year as part of my management development program? Project management, research scientist, winemaker?
Is the fact that my experience and education is solely in the wine industry going to limit my chances at a top school?
I'd appreciate any advice or input. Thanks!

You're welcome. To answer your questions:
1) You have the competitive stats and probably the quality experience to justify applying to a top MBA program. You haven't mentioned why you want an MBA. A fitting goalis also a requirement.
2) Project management probably. I am not sure what a winemaker does?
3) No as long as you can demonstrate leadership, organizational abillity and impact on your job as a winemaker and have a goal that requires an MBA.

My life goal has always been to be a leader in the wine industry. I'd like to phase out of winemaking and become a CTO or get involved in Operations or Winery Management. For that reason, I want to learn more about Finance, Strategy, and Management. Unfortunately, my line of work does not afford young people many management opportunites so I take as many leadership opportunities as I can. Can you suggest any other ways I can demonstrate leadership to Stanford or Harvard or Kellogg?
