Hello there,
I'm new to this forum and I wanted to get an idea of when I should be applying to MBA programs. I have a few goals I would like to achieve before I apply, hence I appreciate your expert opinion on when I should be applying for my MBA. Ideally, I would like to be enrolled in an MBA program by the time I'm 27 (matriculation in 2017).
Here is a brief background of myself:
Current age: 25
Work experience: I currently work in mutual fund operations (Associate I) for a small/medium sized firm. I've been here for about a year, but I would like to stay here for another 2 years and hope to have a senior associate role by then. Prior to this, I worked in the securities division of a large brokerage firm on Wall Street for about a year as an operations analyst.
Undergrad: 3.9 GPA in Finance from a small public university; graduated in 2012
GMAT: 700 (Q47 V39); I know this isn't the greatest score, but I don't have time to retake this exam as I am studying for the CFA.
Certifications: None thus far, but this is where my dilemma comes in. I would like to pursue the CFA designation and hopefully have it before I enroll in an MBA program. The reason for this is that I want to stay in investment management even after I'm done with my MBA, and having the CFA charter would make me way more marketable (I think!). I also don't think it would be ideal for me to complete Level 1 or Level 2 of the CFA, complete my MBA, and then go back to do the final level. I know that I still have some time before I should worry about getting into a good MBA program considering my age, but I really really want to be done with school as soon as possible. What are your thoughts on this? Does it make sense for me to finish the CFA before going for my MBA?
Target programs: Dream schools - Cornell, Duke, Yale
Target schools - Emory, Kelley, Georgetown
I would appreciate an expert opinion on my current plans and whether I have a shot at being admitted to my dream/target schools!

Glad you're getting rolling so early. As I'm sure you've noticed with all of your questions that even when starting the process early you still have a lot to do. I would say the key question is around your CPA given you are so far removed from applying it is not really helpful to gauge your odds. I would say focus on what you want to get out of your career and not specifically b-school in this instance. B-school is just a part of reaching your career goals and since a CPA seemingly aligns well I think it would make sense especially given your age and your desire to work in investment management.

It took me some time to get back to this forum, but I have a few follow up questions I was hoping you could help me address. So, I graduated in 2012 and now have a little over 3 years work experience although I did have an employment gap of 9 months that you helped me address in a different post (helped with family business). In order to address the community service issue, I have taken up a position as Treasurer for a Latino business organization (I'm not Latino myself, though). I plan on being on the board of this organization for at least another year. Apart from that, I'm just focused on doing better at work by taking on more projects, etc. I know of quite a few individuals who graduated in the same year as me who are headed to b-school (top 10-25 programs). It almost seems to me like I'm already behind the curve in terms of pursuing my MBA now! I have put the whole CFA charter issue on the back burner for now because I've got way too much on my plate and I don't think I'll be able to devote the amount of time necessary to pass the exams at this point. So I guess my overall concern is should I be applying in the coming application cycle for matriculation in Fall 2016 or would you suggest I still wait until 2017?
