Employer Recommendation Letters

Question

Hi,

Could you please let me know what should be the format of the recommendation letters that one should obtain from one's former employers or supervisors before applying to B-Schools?

Should there be something specific mentioned the letters ?

I believe each school requires something different from the recommenders and each school asks a slightly different question or set of questions.

In general though it is good for a recommender to use a specific story or anecdote about you and your abilities. Specifics allow the adcom to "see you in action" versus hearing generic praise about you.

Every school has a prescribed format for recommendation letters. When you create an account for the online application, you can add your references' details and they will receive the information about the required format.

It is advisable for you to familiarize yourself with the format so that you can have an informed discussion with your references and prepare them well to recommend you in the best possible way.

Re: what should be mentioned- besides the questions asked by the school, think about what are your strengths and distinctive aspects of your profile that you want adcom to notice? Encourage your references to capture those details. Your recommendations should be part of your overall application strategy.

Each school has their own format - and almost all of them have moved to an online platform. So research each school you're applying to so you can prep your recommenders appropriately!
