Hey Bhavik,
I was hoping for some guidance on how to approach the next 7 months. I was a researcher for 4 years. 2 years at the University of Texas and 2 more years at Weill Cornell Medical School after graduating. I decided not to go to graduate school and moved into sales/account management for a clinical and research laboratory distributor. I moved up a little bit, but there isn't much room for growth otherwise. I am applying this fall for 2016 and am looking into Wharton (Penn), Columbia, Yale, Sloan (MIT), Fuqua (Duke), McCombs (Texas), and Jones (Rice). I have visited Wharton, Columbia, Fuqua, and Jones thus far. Will be visiting MIT later this spring, Yale whenever I get a chance, and McCombs in the fall (football season...) so I can speak to how I am fit with schools and their unique offerings. I'll probably end up applying to 5 schools total.
My biggest concern is my undergraduate record. I graduated with a 2.98 GPA from a state school and studied neurobiology/philosophy. I am finishing up an accounting class right now in which I have a solid A and am starting a finance class in May which I hope to get at least an A- in to show my quantitative capability. These classes will be on the same transcript as well so I'll probably be on the positive side of 3.0 after those classes if that means anything at all. I also got an A and B+ in Calculus 1 and 2 when I was in school. The science courses sunk my GPA and I spent more time doing research and running an organization than I did on school work (which I didn't prioritize enough at the time). I got a 700 on the GMAT the first time around, but didn't do too hot on the quantitative side (47V 68%) so I will retake it more likely than not as I make some progress through the finance course.
On the extracurricular side, I am a board member for alumni base and organize philanthropy events for the 2500+ alumni in New York City. I am also the head of a health and biotechnology organization and have grown the organization roughly 50% since taking over at the end of 2014. I'll also add that my post MBA goals are to join a VC firm focusing on funding companies in the healthcare and biotechnology space.
It seems like I'd be most competitive for Jones, but I want to at least be able to competitive for McCombs and possibly Fuqua, Yale, and Sloan. Wharton and Columbia seem like pipe dreams right now. Is there anything else I can do better my chances of getting into these schools???
Thank you,
