I used to live in Israel for a couple of years when I was younger. Sababa!
Your profile valuation is going to be a little more difficult because I do not really know what you want to do after your MBA program. This is actually critically important. All schools do ask about this. It may not be an essay question per se, but they will definitely ask you about your intentions on the online application.
Let us see if I can help you out a little bit. Goals need to combine personal passion with professional experience. So they need to leverage your current professional background and the passion you have demonstrated through your leadership – perhaps activities outside of the office. I see that you are involved in with your families art business. That could possibly serve as some personal passion, and thus future direction when combined with your current skills and an MBA. Also see that you mentor at a startup accelerator – that can also serve as some tangible evidence for what you value or believe in.
I see a story coming together here. You could possibly use your skills in accounting and finance (developed during your MBA studies), your project management abilities (Ernst & Young) and your passion for building organizations (startup accelerator), as well as your involvement in the world of art since an early age (family business) to create something like this – "in the long-term, I want to use my skills to help cultural and performing arts institutions achieve their goals." This will combine all of the elements above. In the short term, you can put together something like "upon graduation, I plan to work in the nonprofit practice of a major consultancy, such as McKinsey."
Now the question is – what are you missing that will help you get to these goals? Put another way, what will an MBA provide me that will bridge the gaps I have in my current skill set? You probably need a greater understanding of nonprofit management, organizational development, and the intersection of private enterprise, governments and social institutions. That is just the beginning.
Now you need to figure out what programs will allow you to achieve these goals. So what MBA programs out there have strong curriculums within nonprofit management – for example? What MBA programs have the types of hands-on initiatives you need to hone the skills you are learning in class within the nonprofit arena (while you are still in school)? What MBA programs have significant relationships within the nonprofit world (and within consulting for that matter)? I would point you to career center reports in order to ascertain what schools are sending their graduates into what industries.
Beyond the goals that I just laid out for you – strictly as an example – the rest of your profile is
strong. Digging into it a bit deeper, your GMAT score could be 10 or 20 points higher, but I do not really feel like it is going to be something that breaks you at any school. Your military experience in the IDF is excellent. I am sure there is some good stories that can come out of that. To be honest, there is not one specific thing that stands out beyond the others, but overall, when your profile is viewed holistically, you are a very strong candidate at any of the schools you laid out. Of course Stanford is always a reach school for anyone. But you know that. I would shoot a little higher than Johnson. That the school that would be a backup, but I do not really think that is the school you should apply to in round one. Leave it for round two. I Would also encourage you look at schools that are ranked slightly higher – like Kellogg, Chicago Booth and perhaps Wharton. I know that these schools may or may not have strong nonprofit management programs, but whenever the goals I laid out above are strictly pro forma goals. Just based on the profile you laid out (and of course with solid goals that are appropriate for an individual school), you should shoot a bit higher.
