Hi Veritas,
I would love to hear advice from you about the evaluation of my profile and my target B-schools. Here’s my profile:
- Nationality: Vietnamese; Age: 28; Gender: Male
- GMAT: 640 (Q50, V26) 1st time (I am going to retake soon and I'm pretty sure I will get 700-730)
- Undergraduate: Bachelor in Finance/Banking; GPA: 7.2/10 (maybe comparable to 3.0/4.0) (This point is actually not good cause I have some problems during undergraduate)
- Professional certificate: Passed CFA Level II in June 2012 (haven't take the Level III because it is too intensive for my work, definitely will take it before MBA graduate)
- Work Experience: 05 months for a local bank (without significant things), 5 years for the Inspection Department of the government agency that regulates Vietnamese stock market:
+ Although staying in one department, I did pass all sub-groups: Securities/Fund management firms group, Public/Listed companies group, Laws Group, Manipulation/Insider trading group. In general, I involved almost every aspects in the securities market, which include: joining investigation task-forces to companies, analyzing/investigating manipulation/insider trading cases, dealing with denunciation, complaints from investors, involving in the legal framework constructing…
+ Leadership: deputy leader of several task-forces, main drafter of 1-2 legal documents
+ Promotion: In 2014 almost have been promoted to the lists of planned Deputy Inspector, but then was rejected by the HR Depart because I was too young (even for a planned Deputy Inspector, and this is the fact in government agency in Vietnam

). However, my Letter of recommendation will be very good since all my direct supervisors regard me as one of the best in my department. Plus, I got some minor awards for the best employees.
- Start-up: I and some of my friends used to start-up a fast-food shop in 2013, but failed and had to close it 3 months later. Reason: not planned well, too many conflicts among us. But I had several good lessons from this failure.
- Extra curriculum:
+ Sport: Badminton, Soccer, Swimming. Just play for hobbies, though got a bronze medal in an internal badminton tournament of the company.
+ Volunteer: join volunteer team of the CFAI Research Challenge in Vietnam, but involving not significantly.
- Reason for MBA: want to move out of the current position to involve in business-environment of stock market. Short term: jobs in finance in US; long-term: management position in Vietnam securities firms.
- My target B-schools: safe choice: TCU Neeley (quite surely get a full-tuition scholarship); desirable choices: Emory, Owen Vanderbilt, Carlson, Fisher.
I really appreciate your comments. Thanks!
