I've been asked by a nonprofit to be on the Junior Board. The JB is used to plan fundraisers and help the executive board with their duties. The nonprofit is pretty large and is well known in the nonprofit world. The financial commitment is pretty extensive though ($1000 a year for 5 years). Is this normal? Do you think this is prestigious or would just doing ad hoc projects for the nonprofit show enough community engagement? I will be reapplying to some schools and one of the adcom members said i need more leadership in the community. Would being a member of the JR Board be better than just doing projects for them? How much better?
A board seat is usually good for applications, but if budget is an issue, you could seek one out that does not have a financial commitment. Many nonprofit roles don't require financial commitments. The other thing to think about is having a discussion about modified support if the 1k is too much for you.
Leadership roles like that will help your application, but most roles don't require you to pay money.
Good luck
