Hi,

I wonder whether to include my medical condition PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) in my application. The fact is that the moment I knew about it was my game changer. It changed me from a boy into a real man, and made me today. I think I could tell a compelling story about it.

The problem is I don't know what the adcom's attitude is towards an applicant with a medical condition. For those who don't know about this condition, it affects one's health quite much, but not until he/she gets old (probably over 45, or even 60). I am now 28, and the condition will not impact me much at least in 15-20 years.

So my question is whether I should include it in my application.

One more thing, my GPA in undergraduate (Finance) was quite bad, mostly because I did not really have a career goal at that time and I ignored studying, turning to do part-time jobs. But as I said above, the game changer came later and I got a clear path, sat the CFA exam and passed 2 levels with great scores. I think my performance in CFA tests could justify my low GPA, and I did include them in my resume. So should I write the optional essay to explain more about my GPA?

Thank you so much for considering my questions!

Medical conditions certainly have a place in the application if they are part of a broader story of you growing. While this should be done carefully so the message comes across in the right way, it is definitely common to talk about something difficult that you face. Good luck and contact me if you want more specific advice on how to best do this!
Thanks for your advice!

Well you COULD write it... but if it hasn't affected you yet and it won't affect you till after you leave, why would you? I mean what's the relevant story there? Is it a story of personal development you are going for? If, so, then great! But don't forget that it only has it's relevance here within the context of an application to Business-school.

Thanks. I want to tell about it in the optional essay for 2 reasons:
- To explain my low GPA in university: as I said, the condition changed me a lot. Before that, I was not a motivational person and did not have real goal. So I did not focus on study when I was at university, resulting in the low GPA;

- To show my progress to become mature and a motivational man.
