If you are targeting top schools in the US, you will need 3-4 years of progressively responsible experience, so I am not sure targeting next year works in your case. Try to seek leadership opportunities at work and build up good grace from your supervisors who can then attest to your abilities in recommendations. If you do this, you could target any school which seems to fit with your post MBA goals.

Would a diversification in the professional role be required? Or growth in my current IT position should suffice?

Since IT is a very common career in the Indian applicant pool, you can differentiate yourself by working internationally or with international teams. Most applicants from this pool who work in IT have very little international exposure. Diversifying your career can also help, but only if it's progressive towards your short and long term post MBA goals. Diversification as an individual effort will not get you anywhere, but if you do something that gets you closer to your ultimate career goals, it will be viewed in a better light and be more impressive.
