Hi!
I didnt want to cross post, hence this common post. I have been lurking on the GMAT forums for about a week now. Since my GMAT was scheduled for today (10th Oct, 2005), I could'nt get to use the GMAT related forums as much as I would have liked.
I had promised myself ages back that I would not think about BSchool untill I had a decent GMAT score in hand. I just finished by GMAT today and scored 750 (Q49; V42).
I would really appreciate your thoughts on my chances for admission to one of the top programs. I want to work in the energy sector after doing my MBA - I have energy consulting and energy sector majors in mind.
My profile is as follows:
# 2003 - 2005: Associate at a top law firm in India - Working with infrastructure and project finance, mostly in India and some based in SE Asia. Have acted in a fair number of international transactions including several energy sector acquisitions.
# 198 - 2005: BA, LLB (Hons), National Law School, India. Ranked 39 / 2500 in the entrance exam (Acceptance rate = 80/2500). Was placed midway in class. CGPA of 4.5/7 (roughly equates to 2.6/4).
# Trainer at corporate training seminars for oil and gas majors. Extremely strong co-curricular and extra-curricular activities (No sports though). Student government in Law School and in High School. Lots of debating and international competitions. Involved with several community development efforts in and around New Delhi, Inda. VP - Communications with a voluntary organisation.

You have a competitive profile for a top MBA program. However, the ones that I know are strong in energy are UT Austin and Rice. They are both excellent programs, but they do not have as strong an overall brand as other programs, such as those ranked in the top ten by any number of rankings.
I suggest you contact some of the top ten programs, especially those that feed consulting companies, and see which ones have classes that relate to the energy industry or professors who are well versed in that industry. Apply to those top programs and then perhaps apply to UT or Rice also as safety programs.

I have now more or less decided to split up my application process. I am thinking of applying to my top 5 this year.
If I do not make it, I will follow a more structured application process with two or three safetys next year.
I have only 28 months of experience as a write this - So I figure that applying next year should not be an issue, even if applying this year is.
HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg are in my top 5 list. Does Sloan require any particular kind of background? I couldnt see any such requirement when reviewing Sloan application materials.
I will adopt a much broader list next year if this year's application process doesnt work out.
