Talking about a sensitive subject

Hey

I am from India and I am applying to Booth, McCombs and Anderson

Is it okay to touch briefly upon sensitive topics such as racial discrimination?

I want to talk about it to show why collaboration is important to me. Or is there a better way of saying this? Here is what I am writing in my essays

At eighteen, my passion for soccer won me a scholarship to play professionally in Bristol, England. Living in the rough neighborhood of Filton, I was attacked physically and verbally on account of my ethnicity. While the grim circumstances off the pitch did not improve, my relationships with my team-mates, some of whom were Filton-bred, matured as we formed a winning soccer team. This life-lesson on the power of collaboration in breaking down walls and achieving collective success influenced me greatly.

It is definitely fine to talk about a sensitive subject like that, though you would want the message to be a bit more involved and powerful than that. This is the right direction though.

I agree that you can talk about this. Although, I would like to know more about your role in breaking the negativity and making it a favorable situation for yourself. If left like this, it sounds like things just improved on their own. Instead, take credit. This is a good place for you to show your capability to influence others, your maturity levels and your ability to change the environment/ take leadership.

These are the type of personal narratives the ad comm loves to hear, keep the message focused to ensure you are directly addressing the essay prompt. Remember the topic is important but not more important than the action steps, challenges, lessons learned, and results of the anecdote. So make sure even though your topic is personal you are keeping it structured and on topic
