Hey its all about how you frame your experience, the fact you work at a family business will not affect things in a vacuum. Now the rigor of your role and the leadership/teamwork experiences you have in this role are the most important things. On the GMAT front you will want to aim to clear 700 to make yourself competitive and of course the better you do here the better you position yourself for admission. Good Luck!

thank you for your reply. also, the fact that i have done engg from a private not that well known university, a deterrent for admission to ivy league universities? more importantly, in such a competitive world, do the ivy leagues even look at applicants like me?

Hi there,

Glad to see you're starting the preparation early! Good for you. Your focus areas between now and the time you apply should be in the following areas:

* A GMAT score of 720 will set you apart for your applicant pool (GMAT scores rise every your, you're in a tough pool, and you need to compensate a bit for your GPA)
* Your work experience is good so far, but you'll need to demonstrate your leadership capacity and impact; take on new initiatives when you can and focus on key accomplishments
* Involvement was good in school - what have you done since?

Best of luck!

Hi, aside from the advises above, demonstrating fit with the school on how it will benefit you post MBA and help you make a bigger impact on the company and world around you would be helpful. It will also help to demonstrate how your unique experiences working in the family business will enrich classroom discussions and the learning of your peers from the typical MNC's, banking, and consulting backgrounds.

All the best!
